Hot Peppers, Beer
Anyone who likes chili peppers knows that water will not cool your mouth off. In fact, it will make it worse. What you really want is something like milk or bread. It’s not instant, but it helps if you managed to eat something insanely hot.
I’ve also found that beer helps. People have argued with me on this, saying something about acids and bases. However, as it turns out, I am right. To quote: “Alcohol and alcoholic beverages also dissolve capsaicin due to the solvent characteristics of ethanol.”
The combination of endorphins (ever had a habanero? Do you remember?) and alcohol probably doesn’t hurt either.
True story — My sister graduated from college a couple weeks after I did. I drove up to Santa Fe for it. That night we all got extremely drunk. Watching the ceremony the next day was no fun due to my hangover. Afterwards, though, we all went to a mexican restaurant, where I ordered a very hot enchilada.
By the time I was finished with the enchilada, I felt fine.
