Final Fantasy XII
I mentioned this before, but last weekend I picked up Final Fantasy XII.
Something terrifying occured to me as I was talking to the clerk. I decided to buy the fancy metal-box collector’s edition. First, he tried to sell me the hint guide. I guess they push those like crazy now. When I bought Kingdom Hearts 2, they did the same thing.
He must have asked me 2 or 3 times when I finally said, “No, I can figure it out.” I’ll probably eventually buy the guide. I always do. But not for the first run through the game. Kinda spoils it.
Anyway, he went on to say that it was better than FF X, which I guess a lot of people consider to be the best one. He asked if I’d played it. I responded something like, “Oh, sure. I’ve played them since the SNES games.” The clerk looked a little surprised.
I don’t remember exactly when FF 4 (2 in the US) came out, but I was about 14 years old when I first played it.
I’ve been playing these damn games for almost 15 years.
I’ve played most every FF game that’s been released, and of those I’ve played, I’ve beat most of them. Even FF Mystic Quest. Really.
I’ve played (but not beat) FF 1, FF 5 and FF Tactics. Haven’t played FF 2 or 3 (old NES ones — I played the SNES ones, aka 4 & 6). I only played one the the gameboy ones (didn’t beat it). Haven’t played the game cube one or FF XI (online, meh). But all the other ones. Yup. I’ve played and beat FF IV and VI through X-2.
How depressing.
Oh, and while I’ve got my utter geekdom exposed… FF X probably was the best, though VII may have been better. VIII was extremely underrated. IX was the weakest of the PS1 titles, though I still really liked it. BTW, a guy named JR in Las Cruces borrowed FF IX from me years ago. $10 for whoever gets it back for me.
FF XII is a blast so far. It’s cut into my poker time. Severely.

How’s the gameplay? I heard it was more real time, so I’m not sure how well I’d like that. I loved X so it’d be nice to get into a good story again…

It appears to be more real-time, but I’m not sure that it is. Basically, you don’t change screens for combat.
From what I’ve heard, the combat is similar to online games.
It is different from older FF games, but it took me only a few fights to get used to it.
